NEW YORK — Luigi Mangione, who is scheduled to go before a New York state jury in June on charges that he murdered UnitedHealth Group Inc. executive Brian Thompson, is seeking to delay a subsequent federal trial until 2027.

Defense lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo told U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett in Manhattan Wednesday that it will be hard to find an impartial jury for the September federal trial following the publicity around the earlier state case. She asked to delay the federal case until at least January.

Both state and federal authorities are prosecuting Mangione for the December 2024 slaying of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. The federal case originally included a charge that carried the death penalty, but Garnett dismissed that count in January. Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both cases.

If the federal case is not delayed, it could mean that Mangione would be in the “impossible position” of having to find impartial jurors who have been “constantly bombarded with news reports and social media posts” about the state charges, she said.

Friedman Agnifilo added that the close trials will complicate defense preparations. She said she would also ask for a delay in the state trial until September. She said federal prosecutors object to any delay. Spokespeople for Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg declined to comment.
