Prince live album leads Record Store Day's Black Friday list

MINNEAPOLIS — The Prince estate is offering fans something they can all agree on for Black Friday this year: a new live album.
The three-LP vinyl or two-CD set “3121 Las Vegas Live,” from the Minnesota music legend’s 2006-07 residency at the Rio Hotel & Casino, will land in record shops on Nov. 27 as part of Record Store Day’s annual Black Friday bonanza. Only 9,400 copies of it will be available at first, in keeping with RSD’s collectors-baiting limited-release scheme.
Prince’s Vegas residency topped off a bountiful mid-‘00s run that included his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and “Musicology” album and tour in 2004, followed by the 2006 release of another well-received record, “3121,” and then his bar-setting Super Bowl halftime performance in 2007.
While the Rio residency lasted six months, the recording used for the new live album came from one night: Jan. 20, 2007, just two weeks before the Super Bowl gig. Among the 21 tracks featured in the collection are: the “3121” tracks “Black Sweat,” “Satisfied” and “Lolita;” older classics “Girls & Boys,” “Kiss,” “U Got the Look,” “Cream” and “Purple Rain;” plus covers of “Down by the Riverside,” Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music.”
Per Sony Legacy’s announcement, “The recording captures the intimate feel of the Las Vegas residency while demonstrating Prince’s versatility as a performer and bandleader.”
Reaction to the new set from Prince fans has been largely positive. It’s a sharp contrast to the backlash the singer’s estate faced over its last release, “Timeless,” issued in August with new (and secretly added) backing parts.
“Happy about this,” one fan, Sam Hayden, wrote on the Facebook fan page Housequake, “but this is something that needs a wider release so more people can get it.”
So it goes with Record Store Day releases. Here are some of the other limited-edition record sets that will only be available in independent record stores on Black Friday:
