Jacob Collier invites you to play in his Audience Symphony Orchestra in San Diego next March
Published in Entertainment News
SAN DIEGO — Seven-time Grammy Award-winner Jacob Collier is well known for performing one-man concerts at which he invites his audiences to serve as spontaneous multipart choirs. His San Diego concert in March at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park will take that a very big step further by featuring — for only the second time anywhere — his Audience Symphony Orchestra.
The name may be a bit misleading. Collier, 32, won’t be picking musicians from his audience at his March 6 Shell concert, which is being presented by the San Diego Symphony. But he is inviting musicians from here, there and everywhere in the United States to audition to perform in his Audience Symphony Orchestra, which made its world debut in San Francisco last October at Davies Symphony Hall. Its conductor is Collier’s mother, Suzie, who is a conductor, violinist, educator and Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music.
The auditions to select up to 62 instrumentalists won’t be in person, although the pre-concert rehearsal in San Diego will be conducted here, live and in real time. Auditions will take place — in a manner — through 11:59 p.m. PT Nov. 1.
Musicians must sign up at audience-orchestra.jacobcollier.com and complete all parts of the online registration. Auditioners must submit performance videos, as specified in the registration instructions. Those selected will be paid for the rehearsal and performance here. You do not need to be a member of the Musician’s Union to apply.
There are a number of requirements for those auditioning. They must be at least 18 years old and legal U.S. residents. They must have proof of valid U.S. work authorization. Those applying to audition must submit two short, contrasting pieces; a brief video explaining why they would like to be part of this orchestra; and a short, prepared excerpt (materials are downloadable from the online form).
Tickets for Collier’s March 6 Audience Symphony San Diego concert at The Shell go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at theshell.org/performances/jacob-collier/. Prices range from $50-$125. There will be no presales.
