Trump denies report of talks to add his name to Ford's Theatre

President Donald Trump denounced reporting by MS NOW that administration officials have floated attaching his name to Ford’s Theatre, the playhouse where an assassin killed President Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

“The story that the White House, or me, want to affix my name to Ford’s Theater, in Washington, D.C., where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, is a ridiculous lie,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social Wednesday night. “It is FAKE NEWS!”

The story said it is unclear how seriously the officials have considered the name change or how such a process would work. According to the theater’s website, the federal government bought the building in 1866. It became an office building and was used to store government records before being turned into a museum to honor Lincoln. In 1968, the restored theater held its first performance since the assassination.

A renaming would be the latest attempt of the president to make a lasting imprint on the U.S. capital, before the end of his term. Trump threatened to scrap efforts to repair the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts unless his name was added to the building. U.S. passports have been emblazoned with his image as well as banners adorning various agency buildings.

Other news organizations have reported that administration officials have also discussed putting the president’s name on the new Washington Commanders stadium as well as Dulles International Airport in Virginia and New York City’s Pennsylvania Station.

The president’s lashing out at MS NOW reporting comes after he announced last week that he would ban reporters from the outlet as well as from CNN and Politico from the White House grounds. The outlets sued the administration Monday and are awaiting a ruling from a judge.
