Here are the other Republicans Trump boosted while in Kansas to help Sen. Marshall

President Donald Trump announced that he’d host a “Kansas style rally” to support Sen. Roger Marshall, a Kansas Republican in the midst of a bitter campaign against the pastor of the nation’s largest Methodist church Adam Hamilton.

But on the stump on Monday, Trump also lent his support to other candidates that are up for election this year. During the three-and-a-half hour event in Park City, Kansas, a rotating group of Republican candidates took the stage to stump for themselves, praise the president and urge people to vote for Republicans come Nov. 3.

Here’s what Trump and some of the candidates had to say.

Roger Marshall

Marshall spent his time on stage framing the Republican platform as securing the border, strengthening the military and lowering taxes. He attacked Democrats, and his opponent, as too liberal for the conservative state.

“The legacy media wants to make this race so complicated, but let me just tell you, to me, it’s really simple. What do Republicans do? We give you secure borders, a strong military, and lower taxes,” Marshall said. “It’s that simple.”

Trump called Marshall “one of the greatest senators” and showered him with praise at several points during his 90-minute speech. He also pushed back on criticisms Marshall received about his billing practices when he was a rural doctor.

Trump incorrectly claimed that Marshall was obligated by law to collect unpaid medical bills.

“He would have been breaking a very strong criminal law, and he would be subject to criminal arrest and liability if he didn’t do it,” Trump said.

Court records revealed that over 80 people went to jail for failing to pay bills at Marshall’s hospitals, which he co-owned. A Star analysis found that Marshall’s interest rate of 18% was the highest of any medical provider in the state.

But Trump claimed Marshall got a “bum wrap,” and that he’s been painted as “some kind of a Shylock-type guy,” an antisemitic slur based on a Jewish moneylender in the play “The Merchant of Venice.”

Ty Masterson

Ty Masterson, who is running for Kansas Governor, spoke for about five minutes at the rally pitching the Republican ticket as a path to national prosperity, and Kansas’s piece of it.

“Because this man needs to be able to lead our country, and we will,” Masterson said. “Kansas will see its piece of American greatness.”

Trump endorsed Masterson during the primary election, which he said helped the campaign gain momentum in a crowded Republican field. He spent as much time speaking about his Democratic opponent, Kansas Sen. Cindy Holscher.

“Cindy Holscher is the most radical candidate ever to run for Kansas governor. I would call her a radical lunatic,” Trump said. “Even Laura Kelly, your governor, said Holscher is far too extreme for this position.”

Kris Kobach

Kobach, who is running for reelection as the Kansas Attorney General, was a big presence during Trump’s first term. He was rumored to be in the running for several high ranking positions, and led an advisory committee on election integrity. But during Trump’s second term, Kobach has been less involved in Washington D.C. politics.

Kobach spent his 10-minute speech highlighting legal wins he’s secured as the state’s attorney general. He said his role shifted after Trump won

“Things got even better when President Trump took office, didn’t they? I didn’t have to wake up every morning and after breakfast think, ‘Now, how do I have to sue the president today?’ Things got a lot easier,” Kobach said.

He praised Trump for pushing for the 387G program, which deputizes local law enforcement to do some tasks usually reserved for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Trump briefly acknowledged Kobach near the end of his speech, calling him “a really good friend of mine for a long time.”

“I haven’t seen him in a while, but he’s a great guy,” Trump said.

Eric Schmitt

U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri made the trip to support Trump and the Kansas Republican candidates, traveling from Washington D.C. with the president on Air Force One.

Trump mentioned Schmitt multiple times throughout the night, calling him “a big star” in the Senate and “one of the fantastic people in Washington.” He also said Schmitt could vouch for Marshall and that Schmitt would not want to work with Hamilton in the Senate.

“I’ve listened to Hamilton talk, and to be honest, he’s a little shaky,” Trump said. “I’m not sure that Eric Schmitt will be able to handle that. What do you think, Eric? Can you imagine if you had to work (with Hamilton)? I can’t even imagine it.”

Schmitt is not up for reelection this year.

Who else was there?

Several other Kansas Republicans running for office attended the rally and spoke to the crowd.

State Rep. Pat Proctor, who is running for Secretary of State, asked the crowd to vote for a state constitutional amendment that would clarify that only a person who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to vote in this state.

The state constitution currently says that “every citizen” of the U.S. who is at least 18 years old and a Kansas resident can participate in elections. State election laws already prohibit noncitizens from voting.

U.S. Reps. Derek Schmidt, Tracey Mann, Ron Estes, who are all running for reelection, also spoke in support of Trump’s record and called for electing all Republicans down the ballot.

Trump thanked all for attending the rally and called them “warriors.”

Who was absent?

But not all Kansas Republicans were present for the rally. A notable absent member of the state’s Congressional delegation was U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran.

Amid Marshall’s tough reelection campaign, the senior senator from Kansas has been quiet. Moran, who has served in the Senate since 2011, has not publicly endorsed Marshall’s campaign or touted any recent appearances with his Republican counterpart.

Moran previously endorsed Marshall in 2020 and could still offer some form of public endorsement before the Nov. 3 election. Trump did not mention Moran during his speech.

Meanwhile, the Republican candidate for the state’s 3rd District Congressional seat did not participate in the rally either. Republican Eric Jenkins is challenging Democratic U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, who is seeking a fifth term. Trump did not mention Jenkins during the speech.
