ORLANDO, Fla. — The National Hurricane Center on Saturday began tracking a new potential system in the Atlantic that could develop while keeping tabs on Tropical Storm Jerry as it moves farther away from the Caribbean.

As of the NHC’s 8 a.m. tropical outlook, a tropical wave located well to the south-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands was producing a broad area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

“Some gradual development of this system is possible over the next several days while it moves west-northwestward to northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic,” forecasters said,

The NHC gave it a 10% chance to develop in the next two days and 30% in the next seven.

If it were to grow into a named system, it could become Tropical Storm Lorenzo.

The NHC also continued to give advisories on Tropical Storm Jerry as it moved into the open Atlantic after dumping rain on the Caribbean’s northern Leeward Islands the last few days.

As of the NHC’s 5 a.m. advisory, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph located about 435 miles north of the Leewards and 545 miles south of Bermuda headed north at 16 mph.

“A northward to north-northeastward motion is expected through the weekend, followed by a turn toward the east on Monday,” forecasters said. “Some gradual weakening is forecast over the next few days.”

Tropical-storm-force winds extend out up to 205 miles from its center, but it’s no threat to land.

Swells from the storm, though, are affecting the Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. They are forecast to spread to the Bahamas on Saturday and could begin affecting Florida later this weekend.

Tropical Storm Jerry is forecast to become post-tropical by Monday.

So far the season has had 11 named storms with Subtropical Storm Karen falling apart on Friday as well. Of those, four have become hurricanes, and of those, three turned into major hurricanes.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
