Brooklyn funnyman Reggie McFadden is dead at 57.
The stand-up performer whose acting credits include nearly two-dozen episodes of “In Living Color” died in Tanzania, according to his top-selling author sister.
Bernice McFadden told the Hollywood Reporter that the U.S. State Department informed the McFadden family of her brother’s death. She said they weren’t told how he died or when exactly his death occurred.
He’d been living in Tanzania for nearly 20 years. McFadden’s Facebook page said he owned a gold-mining company and a record label in the East African country.
McFadden’s most recent movie credit on IMDb was for the 2003 film “Road Kings.”
His Comedy Store biography states that he was motivated by not wanting to spend his life in the Brooklyn projects near where he was raised. McFadden’s 1991 appearance on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam” is credited for kickstarting a career that peaked in 1993 when he joined the sketch comedy show “In Living Color.” That program also helped launch comics Jim Carrey, Jamie Fox, David Allen Grier and the Wayans’ family.
McFadden previously appeared in television shows including “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Moesha,” “Hangin’ with Mister Cooper” and “Martin.”
He was remembered by comedians including Dane Cook on Monday.
“Reggie McFadden I saw you kill on Def Comedy Jam and it stuck with me,”Cook posted on X. “A gifted performer who knew exactly what he was doing up there. Rest in peace.”
